purity and divine transcendence. Purity is a result of being holy in the biblical sense, but is not the meaning of the word. Nor is the word connected with divine transcendence, however much this idea is otherwise made plain in Scripture.33 The basic meaning of the word is “consecrated” or “devoted.” In Scripture it operates within the context of covenant relationships and expresses commitment.
